I know how to drive a manual fairly well. I haven’t daily driven a manual in about 2 years, but I’m gonna be driving the 335i almost exclusively for the next few weeks. I just wanna be more smooth in traffic, for some reason I’m having trouble keeping the 1-2 shift consistently smooth in the E92. On the forums many blame the CDV, others just say it’s the nature of the transmission, some have no problem keeping it smooth at all.
I have no trouble keeping it smooth in the E92 M3, which doesn’t have a CDV. I might just have to remove the CDV and see if that’ll remedy the problem.
I’m just glad to be back in a manual. Much more engaging to drive, makes the commute all the more fun.

1-2 shifts are sometimes a bit troubling for me also. Unless I’m flooring it, or somehow manage to get her in her g-spot.

All of this is so perfect.

Yeah, it's like sometimes I'm letting the clutch out more than I usually would by accident and it ends up being really smooth, I try to replicate and it just won't happen.

I love red interiors.

I’m not sure what my issue is, probably just adjustment still.

Red interiors are my life goal.

How's the A6 been so far? 2.7 right?

I did, at one point, have trouble doing 1-2 shifts in my Focus SE - part of it was that I was tired (rest assured that I don’t drive drowsy anymore), and the rest was that I tended to gingerly move the shifter between 1st and 2nd. I got rid of that habit by moving the shift lever with a bit more gusto to match my clutch and accelerator inputs.

In my E46 M3, it took me a while to get that shift down as well. I found that if I revved an extra 200 or so rpm it would settle in better. Maybe rev a little more or less than what feels natural?

You know, I've noticed that it's much smoother if I blip the throttle a little bit as I shift, good advice. Will give it a shot tomorrow morning.

Funny, from some quick reading on the forums it seems like I should be a little more gentle when doing the 1-2 shift.. The notchy gearbox doesn’t like to be pounded apparently (like old 911’s).
And I feel you on driving tired, another reason I'm glad I'm back in manual, it'll make me be more awake after a long night.

Tall 1-2 shift is the likely culprit. If it has an easy clutch, that’s not helping.
Find the first torque peak and shift about 100 RPM over that; err on the side of under-revving and blip it back up if you have to.
Also, remove helper springs. Soft clutches are fucking awful.

What is a CDV?

True, it could be the transmission itself.
The manual does help when you’re shifting gears to get up to speed, but idling at a light and cruising in top gear are what got me.

It's going good, I'm certainly enjoying the extra punch from the turbos, but I could use something a little sportier.

Thanks for the advice, hate soft clutches too. The clutch in the 335i is great for daily driving, but not too soft.

I’ve been driving my Mazda5 for over 3 years (and manual transmissions for the last 32 years), and I still somehow manage to play a noisy game of “Beat the Syncro” on the 1-2 shift, usually when I’m in a hurry. You think I would have figured it out by now.
Similar, but less noisy, is trying to get a smooth start on that thing. Because of the short gearing and good low-end torque I frequently chirp the wheels off the line when doing just a normal, non-agressive, start. I suspect that I don’t let the clutch slip much when launching in an effort to maximize the life of the clutch (I got 231K on the first clutch on the 525i, with most of that in stop-and-go driving).

Maybe it’s because I’m young and stupid, but I daily drive with a stiff clutch in northern VA traffic. It would honestly be even worse with a softer one, because then it would be difficult to modulate the engine at crawl speeds with just my left foot. I’d much rather be able to slip it for a tiny bit to move along than have to rev up, gear in, coast, gear out repeatedly.

i find the more i dont actually think about shifting the smoother i am.

Late reply, I'm driving in NoVa traffic too. Centreville/fairfax area!

Passing through there used to be my daily commute: Up 234 bypass to Liberia, then to Centreville, then New Braddock. Traffic is terrible all through that. But, now that I am out of school and working a Real Job (TM), my commute is significantly reduced. Relaxing, even! :)

No kidding, right around my neck of the woods. Driving in NoVa isn’t that terrible.. If you can avoid traffic, which is tough. When I get lucky and have open roads, I love my commute. Straight shot down 29 or a quick ride on 66 to monument. I know a few good driving roads around new Braddock that I love to drive whenever I can.

There’s that really twisty route from New Braddock that’ll dump you out at the intersection of Hoadly and the parkway that’s pretty entertaining during the day, but absolutely terrifying at night.
